Laboratory of ichthyology is the oldest ichthyologic institution in Russia. In the 20th century, the world fame of the laboratory was brought by works of such outstanding scientists as L.S. Berg, A.N. Svetovidov, G.U. Lindberg, and A.P. Andriyashev. The main direction of laboratory studies include taxonomic inventory of marine and freshwater fish of Russia, and estimation of species richness and taxonomic diversity of Arctic and Antarctic fish.

In last ten years, classification of several fish groups was clarified on the basis of regularities of morphological transformations (from cellular to organism levels). These groups include Liparidae, Cottidae, Muraenolepididae, Pleuronectidae, Zoarcidae, Congiopodidae, Bathydraconidae, Channichthyidae, and some others), their relations were revealed and hypotheses of formation and historical relocation were assumed. The results of these studies are published in a series of books and collective monographs and in more than hundred and half scientific papers.

Laboratory collections

Collection of fish comprises more than 56400 samples (more than 400000 specimens), some specimens originate from the Chamber of Curiosities (Kunstkammer) of Peter I. The collection comprises more than 8700 species, 900 collecting samples are type specimens. This collection is the largest in Russia and one of the largest in the world.
