Description

Serotonergic nervous system and the musculature of a 22-day-old metacercaria of Diplostomum pseudospathaceum. The image shows the brain that consists of a pair of cerebral ganglia and the anterior nerves that extend from the brain and innervate the oral sucker and pharynx. Three pairs of longidutinal nerve cords run posteriorly from the brain (only the ventral pair is clearly visible in the image). The ventral cords give rise to the transverse nerves that innervate the ventral sucker. The nerves supplying the hindbody priomordium extend from the posterior portion of the ventral nerve cords. The image also shows the musculature of the body wall and some internal organs (oral and ventral suckers, pharynx and holdfast).
