Supplements to Proceedings ZIN

Supplements to Proceedings ZIN publish monographs and contributions of conferenses (symposia), held at the Zoological Institute RAS.

Zoological Institute RAS bears costs for publications of one supplement with a volume of 10 printer's sheets per year. Publication of additional supplements as well as expenses connected with exceedings of volume and/or colour printing should be covered from different sources.

Format of the supplements corresponds to those of Proceedings ZIN. Editing of each volume of the supplements is carried out by appointed editors.

Annotated catalogue of the Hymenoptera of Russia, Volume I, Symphyta and Apocrita: Aculeata

Hymenoptera is one of the largest insect orders, with a world fauna of 155.5 thousand species in 8423 genera from 94 extant families, a Palaearctic fauna of 50–60 thousand estimated species, and a Russian fauna of more than 15 thousand estimated species in more than 1500 genera from 78 families. The modern classification of Hymenoptera is given. The first volume treats the sawflies (13 families, 170 genera, 1546 species), wasps (15 families, 253 genera, 1695 species), ants (1 family, 44 genera, 264 species) and bees (6 families, 66 genera, 1216 species) which together, in Russia, comprise 4721 species in 533 genera. The sections for each of the 35 families include characteristics, number of taxa, references, and an annotated catalogue of the genera and species recorded from the fauna of Russia. For each valid genus the type species, synonymy, short characterization, and number of species are given. For each valid species the synonymy, known host plants, hosts or prey, and distribution (in Russia and general) are provided. The book is illustrated using geoschemes for Russia, Europe, and China. The large bibliography helps to assess the level of study of each family. The index of scientific names of Hymenoptera (more than 16000 names) will be useful for taxon searching.

The Chrysididae types described by Semenov-Tian-Shanskij and deposited at the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Saint Petersburg (Insecta: Hymenoptera)

A critical and illustrated catalogue of the Chrysididae types described by A.P. Semenov-Tian-Shanskij and deposited at the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg is given. The lectotype of Chrysis bianchii Semenov, 1892; C. petri alticola Semenov, 1912; C. pulchella adolescentula Semenov, 1912; C. sybarita jaxartis Semenov, 1910; Ellampus hohlbecki Semenov, 1932; Ell. miramae Semenov, 1932; Ell. specularis Semenov, 1932 are designated. Eight species are revalidated: Hedychridium cyanellum (Semenov et Nikol’skaya, 1954); Hedychrum zarudnyi Semenov, 1954; Chrysis karatavica Semenov, 1967; Chrysura oshanini (Semenov, 1954); Ch. petri (Semenov, 1912); Ch. smaragdulus (Semenov, 1967); Pseudochrysis chamaleon (Semenov, 1967); Spinolia phoenix Semenov, 1967; Spintharina extrema (Semenov et Nikol’skaya, 1954). Four subspecies are raised to species rank: Chrysis adolescentula Semenov, 1912; C. dauriana Linsenmaier, 1959; C. personata Semenov, 1967 and C. senescens Semenov, 1967. Five replacement names are proposed: Chrysis andreyi Rosa, nom. nov. pro C. smaragdula Semenov, 1967 (emendation of C. smaragdulus), nec Fabricius, 1775; C. nikolaji Rosa, nom. nov. pro C. medea Semenov, 1967, nom. praeocc., nec Balthasar, 1953; C. tarbinskyi Rosa, nom. nov. pro C. desertorum Tarbinsky, 2002, nom. praeocc., nec du Buysson, 1887; C. uzbekistana Rosa, nom. nov. pro C. sogdiana Tarbinsky, 2002, nom. praeocc., nec Semenov, 1954; C. yurii Rosa, nom. nov. pro C. unica Tarbinsky, 2002, nom. praeocc., nec Radoszkowski, 1891. Of the 349 nominal species-group names proposed by Semenov alone or with Nikol’skaya, 255 are currently considered valid; of the 94 invalid names, nine are junior homonyms and 85 are junior subjective synonyms. Biographical and historical notes on A.P. Semenov-Tian-Shanskij and M.N. Nikol’skaya are given, as well as pictures of 300 types.
