Статья содержит биографический очерк об известном советском палеоихтиологе Л.С. Гликмане (1929–2000), жизнь которого разделена на несколько периодов: детство и эвакуация в ходе войны (1929–1945), жизнь в Саратове (1945–1950), ленинградский период (1950–1970), работа на Дальнем Востоке (1971–1982) и ленинградско-петербургский период (1982–2000). В научном смысле наиболее продуктивным был ленинградский период (1950–1970). К этому времени относятся наиболее интенсивные полевые исследования, собрана крупнейшая в СССР коллекция зубов ископаемых акул (ныне хранится в Государственном Дарвиновском музее), написано 60% научных работ, включая монографию «Акулы палеогена» и раздел по эласмобранхиям в томе «Основ палеонтологии». Всего Л.С. Гликман опубликовал 42 работы (исключая диссертации, авторефераты и фондовый отчет), в их числе – две авторские (1964, 1980) и две коллективные (1964, 1987) монографии и 33 научные статьи. Из меловых и кайнозойских отложений СССР им были описаны девять семейств, 27 родов и более 50 видов и подвидов эласмобранхий – в основном ламнообразных акул. Большая коллекция и способность нестандартно мыслить позволили Л.С. Гликману предложить ряд радикальных изменений в системе акул, а также показать возможности использования их ископаемых остатков для решения задач региональной и глобальной биостратиграфии. В честь Л.С. Гликмана названы четыре рода и четыре вида ископаемых акул и скатов, а также один вид третичного хомякообразного из Приаралья.
