The Krivoe and Krugloe lakes are located in Northern Karelia near the White Sea Biological Station (BBS) of the ZIN RAS. The considerable distance from large settlements makes them a convenient object for studying the natural dynamics of aquatic ecosystems that are practically unaffected by anthropogenic impact. The first comprehensive studies on these lakes were carried out in 1969 and 1970 during the implementation of the International Biological Program. They were resumed on a regular all-season basis in 2002.
Studies on the Krivoe and Krugloe lakes are devoted to the study of the dynamics of food webs, energy flows, nutrient cycling, population dynamics and biotic interactions of aquatic organisms under the influence of natural factors, primarily climate change. Such studies make it possible to determine the reference (initial) state of aquatic ecosystems that are not subjected to anthropogenic stress. The good conditions for conducting experiments created at the biological station of the ZIN RAS make it possible to successfully conduct ecological and physiological studies of the rates of food consumption, growth, metabolism, excretion of nutrients and the life cycles of aquatic organisms in the field.
