International symposium: 'Linnaeus 300 - the future of his science' This year is the 300th birthday of Linnaeus, the Swedish physician and geologist who was the father of taxonomy (naming both genus and species). Linnaeus had close ties with the Netherlands: he took his degree in Harderwijk and carried out his initial classification work in the garden and orangery of a rich merchant in Heemstede. The Netherlands will therefore be celebrating his 300th birthday with a series of special events. On 1 and 2 October 2007, the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Swedish Embassy and the Linnean Society of London will organise an international symposium on the past, present and future of research into the earth's biodiversity. The two-day symposium will feature the following subjects:
