- Evolution and Classification of the Coleoptera. Phylogeny of the major beetle groups,
based on larval and adult morphology.
- Biosystematics of various beetle families, including Ommatidae, Carabidae, Lucanidae,
Decliniidae, Ptilodactylidae, Rhinorhipidae, Artematopodidae, Anischiidae, Elateridae, Derodontidae,
Nitidulidae, Boganiidae, Phloeostichidae, Cryptophagidae, Lamingtoniidae, Languriidae,
Bothrideridae, Cerylonidae, Mycetophagidae, Archeocrypticidae, Pterogeniidae, Ciidae, Zopheridae,
Perimylopidae, Tenebrionidae, Boridae, Pythidae, and Salpingidae.
- Identification of Coleoptera. Construction of an illustrated, interactive computer
database for the identification of larval and adult beetles to the family and subfamily level on a world
basis.
- Ecology of fungus-feeding arthropods, particularly Coleoptera. The nature of fungal
hyphae and fruiting bodies as habitats and food sources of arthropods. Host preference in fungus-
feeding arthropods.
- Use of beetles as measures of biodiversity and indicators of the effects of human
activities on natural habitats.
