Родился 13 октября 1943 г. в г. Свирске Иркутской области, Россия. В 1973 г. закончил кафедру зоологии позвоночных Ленинградского Государственного Университета по специальности биолог-зоолог. В 1976 г. успешно закончил очную аспирантуру при кафедре зоологии позвоночных Ленинградского Государственного Университета.

С октября 1976 г. по настоящее время работаю на Биологической станции «Рыбачий» Зоологического института РАН в должностях: младшего научного сотрудника (1976-1986), старшего научного сотрудника (1986-1992), директора станции (1992-2014), главного научного сотрудника (с января 2015 г. по настоящее время).

Кандидат биологических наук с 1977 г., доктор биологических наук с 1998 г., профессор по специальности "Зоология" с 2013 г.

Основная область интересов – зоология, экология, орнитология, зоогеография, миграции птиц. К настоящему времени имею около 140 научных публикаций на русском и английском языках, из них более половины посвящено явлению ночной миграции птиц в районе Балтийского моря и в аридно-высокогорной зоне запада Центральной Азии.
