Краткая биография

Родился в 1945 г. В 1967 г. поступил на работу в Зоологический институт АН СССР в должности лаборанта. В 1974 г. без отрыва от производства окончил вечернее отделение географического факультета, а затем и аспирантуру Ленинградского государственного университета (кафедра физической географии). С 1985 г. по настоящее время – сначала младший, затем старший, ведущий и главный научный сотрудник лаборатории териологии ЗИН РАН. В 1980 г. защитил диссертацию на степень кандидата географических наук по теме "Динамика высотных ландшафтных поясов Большого Кавказа по палеотериологическим данным", в 2003 г. защитил диссертацию доктора биологических наук по теме "Система и филогения семейства медвежьих (Carnivora, Ursidae)". Г.Ф. Барышников лауреат премии РАН имени Е.Н. Павловского 2011 года

Область научных интересов

Систематика, морфология, зоогеография и филогения хищных млекопитающих; палеоэкология и тафономия плейстоценовых млекопитающих, в том числе найденных на археологических стоянках.
