Research interests:  biofouling communities, succession, community structure, subdominant species, intraspecific and interspecific competition, allelopathy, invertebrate behaviour, blue mussel aquaculture.
Education:
1985 – Diploma of the Higher Education, Leningrad State University, Biological and Soil Sciences Faculty, Ichthyology and Hydrobiology Department. Diploma of the Higher Education, Leningrad State University, Biological and Soil Sciences Faculty, Invertebrate Zoology Department.
1993 – PhD degree, "Regularities of the fouling community succession on the artificial aquaculture substrates of the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis L.) in the White Sea” (Hydrobiology).
2008 - habilitation (D.Sc.) thesis "Development of fouling communities and interactions between fouling organisms in the White Sea".
Main research areas:
The studies are focused on the structure and succession of the fouling communities in the White Sea (since 1983) with special emphasis on the species with the life period of more than 5 years.

The main methods applied are long-term field observations and experiments, which are performed with both single species and communities.

The intraspecific and interspecific competition takes place in the fouling communities, which are mostly formed by the sessile sedentary organisms. Different approaches, including studying both population and physiological characteristics, are applied. The measurements of the mortality and somatic growth rate, respiration rate, biochemical composition of certain tissues, heart and filtration activities, byssus production, fluctuation asymmetry and some others are used.

The allelopathy and behaviour of the invertebrates are also of the scientific interests. The blue mussel (Mytilus edulis L.) is the model object to study the aggregation behaviour, predator and competitor presence effect.

The long-term observations on the multiyear fouling communities are performed for the last 20 years (Kandalaksha Bay, the White Sea). The long-term abundance dynamics of the key species of the associated fauna, mostly polychaetes, is analyzed, with special emphasis on the interactions between the community forming species and the associated fauna.
