Laboratory of Ornithology and Herpetology

Staff Gallery

The subject matter of the Laboratory of ornithology and herpetology of ZIN RAS is traditionally associated with the study of biodiversity of modern and fossil amphibians, reptiles, and birds of Eurasia, and of all the aspects of their biology with the use of new methods and approaches at the world level in cooperation with specialists from leading herpetological and ornithological centers, and also with World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

In 2010–2020, important results were obtained in a field of taxonomic diversity, role of cryptic diversity in its structure, based on an integrated approach with the use of modern methods of investigation. Series (more than 250) of papers on biomorphological diversity, taxonomy, phylogeny, biogeography, paleontology, population ecology, speciation patterns, including clone reproduction, polyploidization, and also critical speciation of amphibians, reptiles, and birds of moderate and tropical latitudes were published.10 monographs, guidebooks, and keys intended for wide circle of zoologists, specialists in nature protection, teachers, students, school pupils, and nature lovers were published. More than 30 new for science species and genera of fossil and modern amphibians and reptiles were described. Results obtained during this period are important for nature protection, they are used in global database on reptiles and amphibians of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), in expert estimations of biodiversity of the fauna of Russian Federation and northwestern Russia, in international Red Lists, Red Data book of the Russian Federation, and regional Red Data books.

Laboratory collections

The history of ornithological and herpetological collections is traced since the foundation of the Kunstkammer (Chamber of Curiosities) by Peter the First. At present, the volume of the ornithological collection constitutes more than 200000 samples, and the volume of the herpetological collection, more than 400000 samples.
