First circular

Dear colleagues,

we are very pleased to inform you that the seventh meeting of the International Sorex araneus Cytogenetics Committee (ISACC) focusing on the cytogenetic and molecular evolution of the model species – the common shrew (Sorex araneus L. : Insectivora, Mammalia) - will take place in St.-Petersburg, Russia, next year. For 17 years since the first meeting organized by some enthisiastic European cytogeneticists in Oxford, UK, Sorex araneus has proved to be a subject of the greatest priority as a result of coordinated investigations of numerous chromosome races discovered throughout Europe. A good tradition has now been established to hold meetings of ISACC once every three years first under the title of «Cytogenetics», then (since 1996) «Cytogenetic and Molecular Aspects». Every time it has taken place in one of the European countries where the members of ISACC are living and working. Now there comes a time when Russia takes its turn to become the host of the next meeting.

Two Russian scientific research organizations - Institute of Zoology (St.-Petersburg) and Severtsov Institute of Ecology and Evolution (Moscow) - with the greatest pleasure invite you to participate in the seventh international meeting Evolution in the Sorex araneus group: Cytogenetic and molecular aspects which will be held in the Institute of Zoology (University Embankment 1, St.-Petersburg) from 28th August to 1st September, 2005.

The scientific program will consist of plenary sessions, poster presentations, workshops and several lectures.

We would like to suggest the following subjects for discussion :

  • Fundamental aspects of evolution in the Sorex araneus group
  • Current chromosomes research
  • Methods of genome study
  • Ecological and genetical aspects of interracial hybridization and hybrid zones
  • Phylogeography
  • Unsolved systematic questions

The official languages of the meeting will be English.

It is expected that the proceedings will be published in the Russian Theriological Journal (periodical issue of St.-Petersburg Institute of Zoology).

If you would like to attend this meeting, please fill in the attached form and forward it to the following e-mail address: s_araneus2005@yahoo.com

with the subject line: Shrew Conference.
