AQUATIC ECOLOGY
AT THE DAWN OF XXI CENTURY

An International Scientific Conference
to commemorate the 100th anniversary of
Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences,
Professor G.G. Winberg

3-7 October, 2005
St. Petersburg, Russia

Scope of the Conference

Professor G.G. Winberg (1905-1987) was the founder of the Russian School of Biological Productivity Studies which at present is one of the leading scientific schools in Russia. Prof. Winberg is highly appreciated by the international scientific community for his research in the field of primary productivity in aquatic ecosystems. In 1972, Prof. Winberg was the scientific chair and one of the organizers of the SIL Congress in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). As a convener of the International Biological Program (IBP) he was heading the efforts of the scientific society to study productivity in the inland waters. For his achievements in this area, in 1977 SIL awarded the Naumann-Thienemann Medal to Prof. Winberg - the highest honor that can be bestowed internationally for outstanding scientific contributions to limnology. Till the end of his life Prof. Winberg was the Head of the Laboratory of Freshwater and Experimental Hydrobiology at the Zoological Institute, President of the All-Union Hydrobiological Society (now Russian Hydrobiological Society), and chairman of the well recognized Scientific Seminar where the most famous hydrobiologists considered as honor the chance to present their results. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Prof. G.G. Winberg Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Hydrobiological Society organize the International Conference to discuss fundamental ideas in aquatic ecology that have evolved from the basic biological knowledge developed by Prof. G.G. Winberg and his contemporaries in Russia and other countries.

Topics of the conference
The following topics will be addressed at the conference:

  • Matter and energy flows through the ecosystems.
  • Theory of functioning of aquatic ecosystems.
  • Comparative ecological physiology of aquatic organisms.
  • Population ecology, trophic webs, and dynamics of aquatic communities.
  • Seasonal adaptations of aquatic organisms.
  • Biodiversity and ecosystem health.
  • Modeling of aquatic ecosystems.
  • Invited and contributed papers will be presented at plenary and poster sessions.
The possibility of organizing a special workshop in the framework of the conference is under consideration. Languages of the conference: Russian, English (with translation).

    Publications

Abstracts of 200 words, including title of the presentation, name(s) of the author(s), address(es) of the author(s), and text of abstract body, should be submitted to the Organizing Committee electronically to the address ecology@zin.ru, with reference "Winberg_100" in the "Subject" section of an E-mail.

It is planned to publish the conference papers as a special issue of "Advances in Limnology" (language: English). Alternatively, papers may be published in the volume of Proceedings of the Zoological Institute RAS (in Russian). Instructions for authors will be given in the Second Circular.

    Registration fee
Regular conference registration fee is 200 USD. The registration fee should be paid by the participants directly to the Organizing Committee of the conference during registration on arrival to St. Petersburg (2-3 October, 2005). Complete manuscripts prepared for publication should be submitted to the Organizing Committee before the end of the conference (7 October, 2005).

    Conference venue

  • The conference will be hosted by the Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Russian Hydrobiological Society both located in the same building at the corner of the Birzhevaya Square and Universitetskaya Embankment of the Neva River. In 2002, the Zoological Institute celebrated its 170th anniversary although the history of establishment of the scientific collection at the institute and the museum exhibitions began much earlier - already since the time of the Emperor Peter the Great, in the early XVIII century. At present the Zoological Institute RAS comprises 16 structural units including research laboratories (departments) and groups, the museum and two biological stations. The Laboratory of Freshwater and Experimental Hydrobiology headed by Professor G.G. Winberg for several decades in the second half of the XX century is now one of the leading departments at the Zoological Institute. At present this laboratory is headed by the successor of Prof. Winberg - Academician, Professor Alexander F. Alimov, Director of the Zoological Institute RAS and President of the Russian Hydrobiological Society. It is also the basic laboratory for the Russian Scientific School of Production Hydrobiology named after Professor G.G. Winberg.
