New genus and species of Nebriini (Coleoptera, Carabidae) from China

V.G. SHILENKOV and O.L. KRYZHANOVSKIJ

In the material collected by the Soviet-Chinese expedition to Sichuan in 1955 one specimen of very interesting Nebriini was found, which has some primitive morphological characters and its taxonomical position must be placed as intermediate between Nebria and Leistus. On the other hand it rather closely related to the relict Chinese genus Archastes Jedl., but differs from it in some importent characters. This specimen is described below as a new genus and species.

Genus Archilelstobrius Shilenkov & Kryzhanovskij, gen.n.

Body dark, without metallic lustre. Head with large prominent eyes, not thickened, neck distinctly constricted. Antennae long and slender, in male almost reaching the apex of elytra. Labrum transverse, with 6 setae, mandibles normal. Penultimate segment of labial palpi with 3 setae. Tooth of mentum (Fig. 3) short, shallow emarginate. Ligula (Fig. 2) long, with two short, protrudent at sides, teeth at apex. Pronotum almost round, lateral and postangular setae present. Elytra strongly convex, elliptic, with entirely-rounded shoulders. Legs long and slender, fore tibiae of male feebly dilated. Prosternal process bordered. Lateral sides of pro-, meso- and metasternum and 1-2. segments of abdomen with sparse but coarse punctures. Aedeagus dilated at apex, with sagittal aileron. The primitive structure of aedeagus with sagittal aileron, pronotum with rounded hind angles, strongly convex elliptic elytra, long bifurcate at apex ligula sharply distinguish the new genus from Nebria. The structure of aedeagus vividly resembles those of some species of Leistus, ligula with long bifurcate apex occupies intermediate position between Nebria and Leistus. Archileistobrius is closely related to Archastes Jedl., but strongly differs in the structure of the aedeagus, which in the latter species is with coarse transverse incisions in the middle part.

Archileistobrius hwangtienyuni Shilenkov & Kryzhanovskij sp.n. (Fig. 1)

Dark piceous, shining, antennae, palpi, mandibles, tibiae and tarsi red brawn. Head with prominent eyes and with distinct constriction behind them; frontal furrows short and flat, almost smooth. Microsculpture faint, consisting of short transverse meshes. Antennae long and slender, extending almost to apex of elytra, their first segment long and cylindrical, with one seta above, segment 2 with 1 seta from below, segment 3 with 6-7 setae at apex. Penultimate segment of labial palpi with 3 setae; submentum with row of 10 setae.

Pronotum distinctly convex, almost round, 1.37 times as wide as head, 1.24 times as wide as long; apical angles slightly prominent and rounded, basal angles fairly rounded; lateral sides narrowly reflexed; median line distinct, basal fovea rather deep, extending on disc of pronotum; apical margin and basal area with sparse but rather coarse punctures, some punctures present in lateral channels. Microsculpture faint, forming short transverse meshes.

Figs 2-8. Archileistobrius hwangttenyunl gen.n., sp.n. - ligula (2), mentum (3), aedeagus, left lateral view (4), apex of aedeagus, dorsal view (5), apex of aedeagus, right lateral view (6), rigth paramere (7), left paramere (8). - Scale A - for figs 4, 5, 7, 8, scale В - for figs 2, 3, 6.

Elytra strongly convex, elliptic, 1.41 times as wide as pronotum, 1.66 times as long as wide, widest in the middle; shoulders fairly rounded. Striae deep, with sparse strong punctures, becoming shallower towards apex; striae 1-2 and 3-4. joining with each other near basal border, striae 6 and 8 disappearing before shoulders; scutellar striole rather long. Intervals convex, apical carlna hardly prominent, interval 3 with 3 small setiferous pores adjoining stria 3, first pore situated near basal border; scutellar pores present. Basal border almost straight, forming with lateral one very obtuse angle. Microsculpture very faint, forming transverse meshes, which are longer and narrower then on head and pronotum. Lateral sides of prosternum, mesosternum and metasternum and segments 1-2 of abdomen with sparse but coarse punctures; metaepisterna 1.6 times as long as wide. Hind coxae unisetose, sternites 3-5 with 2 setae on each side, anal sternlte of male with 2 setae on hind margin. Legs long and slender, fore tibiae of male feebly dilated, there segments 2-3 twice as long as wide. Aedeagus (Fig. 4- 6) with sagittal aileron, long, uniformly curved, at apex dilated, flattened and straightly cut.

Length 10.0 mm. Width 3.6 mm.

Holotype, male: China, Prov. Sichuan, Omeishan, 1100-1800 m, 28.VI.1955, leg. OU PEN-JUN.
