Семейство Ceratocanthidae A. Martínez, 1968
(синоним: Acanthoceridae Lacordaire, 1856) характерно для тропических и субтропических регионов и вполне может считаться экзотическим для Палеарктики - в последнем "Каталоге Палеарктики" (том 3, 2006) приведены лишь 5 видов из спорно-палеарктических севера Индии и юга Японии.
Всего в этом семействе более 300 видов из примерно 50 родов. Некоторые систематики считают эту группу лишь подсемейством внутри Hybosoridae, но наш сайт традиционно критически относится к излишним объединениям.
Многие виды Ceratocanthidae встречаются в гнездах термитов (Isoptera)
и сахарных жуков (Coleoptera: Passalidae).
Однако детали их питания до сих пор остаются невыясненными.
Английские обиходные названия семейства (Pill scarab beetles, Ball beetles, Contractile Scarab beetles) подчеркивают характерную особенность строения и поведения его представителей - способность сворачиваться в шар, полностью скрывая при этом конечности и придатки.
